Lately, the winter blues have settled and I've been stuck in a bit of a rut. Since Spring is coming up, I've decided to brainstorm some ways in which I can break out of my usual routine and instil some creativity, energy and vitality back in my life. Here are some of my tips...
When there is a change of season, we have a tendency to want to become new people. That's why spring cleaning is so popular - we want to air out the cobwebs and embrace a new attitude. In the Northern Hemisphere, Spring is coming, I am waking up from hibernation and wanting to head outside. I've been craving change. We don't need new outfits, we don't need to buy new tools for new hobbies, we certainly don't need to purchase new gadgets, we can refresh ourselves by doing these simple and (almost) free things...
1. Go for a walk
Thoreau once said "Me thinks that the moment my legs begin to move, my thoughts begin to flow." I couldn't agree more. When ever I feel stagnant, the literal motion of walking allows new energy to flow. Get outside and go for a quick walk around the block! Even better if you can map out a new route around your neighbourhood. You'll be amazed what a new walking route can do - you might discover a new cafe, a new bookstore and most importantly, it'll get you out of your usual routine. I found this little 'free library' walking around a new neighbourhood in San Francisco.
2. Try a new exercise regime
I am trying out a new exercise regime called 'plogging' - this is where we combine jogging with picking up rubbish! It's great for the environment and even better for your butt! It started as a Swedish exercise trend and it has taken the world by storm. Basically, you just bring along a rubbish bag and pick up rubbish as you go along your jogging route. It's great cardio and also acts as a form of high intensity interval training (HITT). I love it! Just don't forget your gloves. In San Francisco, the hills are a work-out in themselves, I don't even need a gym membership. Why not give 'plogging' a go or try another form of exercise?
3. Watch inspiring YouTube videos
Whenever I want a kick up the bum to make a change or to feel more productive, I listen to something inspiring in the morning. I love TED talks (obvs) but here is a short list of my other favourites:
Sugar Mamma TV - minimalism, personal finance and living the luxe life on a budget
Muchelleb - being a bad ass girl boss, productivity, efficiency, adulting 101.
Matt De'vella - minimalism and advice on being a content creator
Podcasts are another favourite of mine, I love Oprah's Super Soul Sundays, the Tim Ferris Show and the Slow Home Podcast.
4. Have a break
We measure our lives by productivity targets, short term goals and key performance indicators. It seems we have to always be "switched on" to ensure we get the most out of every minute of the day. This can inevitable lead to burn out. A great antidote to 'burn out' is to take a break. Be gentle on yourself. I have "mental health days" where I turn off all my social media, emails, don't take any phone calls and just rest. Truly rest, no running around cleaning the house or doing chores, just a day of absolute indulgence. I find that as soon as I have a day to myself, I feel better. All my stresses and worries are put into perspective as soon as I take the time to take care of myself.
5. Declutter
Your eternal environment is a reflection of your internal environment. Why not set yourself a decluttering challenge such as 30 items in 30 minutes and you'll notice a change straight away! The energy in the room shifts immediately, allowing you more clarity. Decluttering can help declutter your thoughts, energies and old beliefs. It's time to get rid of the stuff that doesn't spark joy and embrace some empty space.
